Assessment of the prevalence of periodontal diseases in Beedi factory workers of Bilhaur town, Kanpur Nagar District, Uttar Pradesh, India: A cross-sectional study

Introduction: Oral health is a vital part of general health and is a valuable asset of every individual. Periodontal disease is
generally considered to result from an imbalance between potentially pathogenic microbes and the nature and efficacy of local
and systemic host responses. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1500 beedi factory workers
of Bilhaur town. A proforma comprising basic sociodemographic details and the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) of
Treatment Needs Index was used. Data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Statistics
version 21 (IBM Corp. Released 2012. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Descriptive
statistics were calculated. All values were considered statistically significant for a value of P < 0.05. Results: Among the age
group of up to 20 years, 1 (0.5%) worker presented with CPI code 1 (bleeding) and 179 (99.5%) with code 2 (calculus). Among
the 21–30 years age group, 574 (98.6%) had code 2, 5 (0.9%) had code 3 (shallow pockets), and 3 (0.5%) had code 4 (deep
pockets). Among the 31–40 years age group, 266 (67.7%) had CPI code 2, 122 (31.1%) had code 3, and 5 (1.3%) had code 4. It
was observed that as the age advances, the CPI scores also increase; the same results were also found in relation to code x with
statistically significant findings. Conclusion: The study also found that as age increases, the prevalence of periodontal disease
and the level of treatment need also increase, whereas, as the level of education increases, both the level of periodontal disease
and treatment needs decrease.
