Abstract

Patients requiring ossicular chain reconstruction, those with recurrent ear infections, or individuals with extensive or complex cholesteatomas often benefit significantly from a combined approach mastoidectomy. This dual-access technique allows for more precise removal of diseased tissue, improved preservation of ear structures, and better outcomes in terms of hearing improvement and lower recurrence rates. The procedure is tailored to each patient, with surgical adjustments based on the extent of the disease and the ear’s unique anatomy. Compared to traditional methods, this approach has demonstrated superior results in reducing cholesteatoma recurrence and enhancing auditory function. However, it demands careful patient selection, detailed pre-operative imaging, and expertise in both surgical approaches to avoid complications such as facial nerve injury or residual disease. With the integration of newer technologies like endoscopic assistance and intraoperative imaging, the combined approach continues to evolve as a highly effective solution for managing complex ear conditions.
